Kathy Carniero never imagined herself as an author, but after going through a difficult time, she found that there was a gap in the market for what she felt she had to offer.

“This just kind of happened,” Carniero said. “I’ve always written, but if you’d asked me when I was 20 if I would be an author, I would have said no.”

Carniero began writing her first book, “On the Outside Looking In,” after her father died from alcohol poisoning in 2008. She published the book in late 2012. She said after his death, she began looking through books about addiction and found none that had what she was looking for.

“Deciding to write this book was a very interesting process because when I first came up with idea I didn’t know how to do it. So I took all books I read during his addiction and weeded out the ones I liked and didn’t like – and there was probably only one that I liked,” Carniero said. “I didn’t want to just read someone else’s testimonial. I thought that if I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I’d just write it myself.”
